This is the story of Talon's birth. I want to remember as much as possible even though I feel like I will never forget it at this time! I woke up around one in the morning on the 6th for my regular bathroom break and just as I was settling back into bed I felt a gush of fluid. At first I thought it was just regular pregnancy stuff but felt another gush. I jumped out of bed and ran into the bathroom to a flood and knowing my water had broke. I yelled for Jeff to tell him my water was broken and he jumped out of bed to get stuff ready. I didn't see him while I was in the bathroom trying to get it together but I guess he had to sit down and regroup for a second. Cute husband! I took my time showering and finished packing my bag and went over the list of things over and over again. A couple hours later we headed into Labor and Delivery. They didn't even bother testing to make sure it was my water that had broke because I was soaked and they knew. By this time It was around 3:30 in the morning and we got into the room, hooked up to monitors and they started the million questions and paper work. I had planned all along through this pregnancy that I did not want any pain medication or intervention unless It was a do or die situation so I declined just about everything, didn't sign consent forms or have an IV put in (later making it VERY difficult on myself). For the next 5 or 6 hours I tried to sleep through contractions as both sets of grandparents arrived. Around 10 that morning my Midwife showed up and checked me. I was 4 centimeters and around 60 percent effaced so she stripped my membranes to try and get things moving along. After this I got up and Jeff and I walked the halls. It didn't take long for the contractions to kick in as they started coming pretty close together. I went back to the room after about a half hour, where they checked my vitals and the baby. While they did this my midwife's "assistant" (she is getting her CNM) came in and I was starting to feel worn out and told her I was thinking I wanted an epidural. Now on my birth plan and my chart I had requested that Laurie (my Midwife) came in before I was given any pain meds. They called her and decided they would check me again and in less than an hour I was at a 6 1/2 and 90 percent. At this point I knew I could get in the tub and try to work through more contractions. This was great at first but they picked up again and I was starting to lose focus and wanted that epidural again. Katie the assistant was there working with me and I was serious about that epidural so she went and called Laurie and checked me again, I was still at a 6 1/2 and 90 % effaced... so bummed! When they told me this I didn't think I would make it. I was in some serious pain and I got pretty upset and yelled at them asking where she was and I was not kidding I wanted an epidural! Laurie shows up a few minuets later and tried talking to me but i was beyond that point. They got me to switch positions to try and get the rest of me effaced and that was horrible. I was pretty vocal at this point and pushed them away when they tried to see if it was working. They were finally going to give me some pain meds to help but I had to get out of the tub. As I was trying to get out the urge to push came and I pushed through the contraction, the next thing I know the room is filled with nurses and I hear Laurie telling everyone to get ready because I was having this baby (so much for those pain meds). By the next contraction they had a towel around me and I was next to the bed pushing. At this time they noticed his heart beat was going down with each contraction and they began to worry. In order to monitor him better I had to get on the bed and push from there. Can I tell you I was not loving the pushing and not doing that great. They started yelling at me because his heart rate continued to drop and threatened an episiotomy. They stuck an oxygen mask on my face and after the threat of being cut I pushed with all I had and a few minuets later he was finally out! They put him directly on my stomach and let his umbilical cord pulse for a couple minuets before they clamped it. At this point it was all kind of a blur, Jeff didn't want to cut the cord so my mom did and I got to cuddle him while they took care of the after math. I had to get a few stitches and they didn't quite numb me far enough so I felt a few jabs of the needle. They did have to take Talon and check him out a little as he wasn't quite breathing how they would like and never gave out a big baby cry, he was only gone long enough to get his vitamin K and first bath then back in my arms as everything checked out well! In his first hour of like he nursed and got to meet his grandparents who still can't get enough of him!
It was seriously an amazing event. Jeff was AMAZING! He cheered me on when I didn't think I could do it anymore and I only told him to not touch me once! He is such a cute Dad and acts as though he's taken care of a newborn before!
